HIS MAJESTY APPOINTED AS FAO SPECIAL AMBASSADOR FOR NUTRITION

His Majesty King Letsie III has been appointed as newest Special Ambassador for Nutrition by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO)’s Director-General, José Graziano da Silva for FAO of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation.

The announcement was made at a high-level International Symposium on Sustainable Food Systems for Healthy Diets and Improved Nutrition held to explore country-level challenges and successes in the nutritional reshaping of food production, processing, marketing and retail systems.

Pledging to take up his new role with energy and passion, His Majesty welcomed the fact that nutrition is now firmly on the global agenda.

He said in Africa just a few years ago, nutrition was not a priority for discussion, let alone investment, saying now things have changed for the better.

His Majesty therefore urged all members to remember the positive correlation between nutrition and the socio-economic development of nations, commenting that well fed and well-nourished individuals can drive the economic development agendas of their countries.

Also speaking, the FAO Representative in Lesotho, Mr. Yves Klompenhouwer congratulated His Majesty for being appointed as the FAO’s Special Ambassador on Nutrition.

He said Lesotho is ahead of other African countries in the field of social protection, noting that Basotho should really be proud of this achievement.

He further mentioned that the country is expected to continue to play a prominent role in the international debate on Nutrition and Social Protection.

The International Symposium on Sustainable Food Systems for Healthy Diets and Improved Nutrition was jointly organised by FAO and the World Health Organisation (WHO).
