HIS MAJESTY ACCEPTS LETTERS OF CREDENCE FROM NEW ZEALAND

His Majesty King Letsie III has strongly expressed gratitude to the government of New Zealand for its contribution towards Lesotho's democratization process.

His Majesty was speaking at the Royal Palace in Maseru when accepting letters of credence from New Zealand High Commissioner to Lesotho, Mr. Michael Gerrard Burrel on Thursday.

He said New Zealand contributed immensely towards Lesotho's adoption of the Mixed Member Proportional Presentation electoral model, following the 1998 political problems in Lesotho.

He said the model can help Lesotho to the desired political stability by providing an inclusive and broad based national assembly.

He added that New Zealand hosted the Lesotho delegation in 2014 for a visit aimed at deepening the understanding and application of the mixed member Proportional Representation Parliamentary system.

He expressed hope that during his tenure of office as the High Commissioner, both countries will further deepen their relations for the mutual benefit of their people.

He also assured him of the government and Basotho's support during his tour of duty.

Presenting his letters of credence, Mr. Burrel also expressed gratitude to Lesotho for her support during the time of the United Nations Security Council, saying that New Zealand continues to enjoy working with Lesotho in the UN among others.

He said both countries rely on agriculture for economy, expressing hope that Basotho will continue to further their studies in New Zealand, particularly in the field of agriculture.

After presenting his letters of credence, the High Commissioner paid a courtesy call to the Prime Minister.
